Artist's Comments
This series from 1986-8, when I lived with an aspiring painter/sculptor, in New York city. I met him during my first trip to NY in 1985. Our relationship was basically ending. So emotionally, socially and artistically it was a difficult and painful time for me. There are about 4-5 other paintings from this time which I have never exhibited.
As a printmaker-draftsman, I found painting difficult, almost as un-immediate as printmaking. These paintings were based on some squeezed figures that I had done in ceramics. They are like frozen gestures. My studio was our tiny apartment in Midtown Manhattan.
On the bright side, I had fun painting and walking all over Manhattan looking at visual art. So the relationship with the sculptor did not last and I went back to Winnipeg and got a job as an art administrator for the Interlake Mobile Art Center. |
